Campaign Set To Raise $69,000

The annual United Way campaign at U of T Mississauga kicked off last week with a reception in the newly-opened Deerfield Hall. Campaign co-chair Luke Barber announced a fundraising goal of $69,000, adding that the team hopes to surpass that figure by the end of the donation drive at the end of December. Last year, the campaign raised $75,000.

On hand to launch the 2014 fundraising campaign were vice-president and principal Deep Saini, United Way Peel liason Raj Chandegra, and UTM campaign co-chairs Luke Barber and Anthony Wensley.

Chandegra spoke about the work the United Way does with agencies in Peel Region. The event also featured a video performance of “All That Kids Can Be” performed by UTM student, rapper and United Way youth ambassador Wali Shah.

“I’m really delighted to reaffirm our commitment to the good work that the United Way does, and launch ourselves into another campaign,” Saini told the crowd. “We are privileged. It is easy to forget how many people in our community are not so fortunate.”

“The United Way supports the agencies that deliver critical services to our community,” he said.” The list is long, but the work they do pervades every aspect of our community.”

Along with direct donation pledges, the fundraising team has scheduled a number of fun events around campus in the months ahead.

These events include:

  • Tarot Card Readings by Devin (by appointment until Dec. 16)
  • Greenhouse Plant Sale (Oct. 9)
  • Campus Police Lost & Found sale (Oct. 14)
  • Halloween Costume Contes (Oct. 31)
  • UTM Library Book Sale (Nov. 25)
  • Holiday bake sale and photo op with Saini Claus (Nov. 28)
  • Faculty Club Turkey Lunch (Dec. 3)

Details on these events and more can be found on the UTM campaign website.

One change with this year’s campaign is the elimination of online pledge forms, which have been replaced by an electronic opt-in contribution system. The deadline to register for that system is Oct. 6, 2014. If you did not receive the notification email, or wish to contribute with a standard paper pledge form, please contact Luke Barber by email at lucas.barber@utoronto.ca
