The Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex has been named a 2012 “design excellence” winner by the Ontario Association of Architects.

Fifteen projects, designed by Ontario architects, received the “design excellence” award including U of T Mississauga’s new Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex, which was officially opened on Nov. 1, 2011. The winners were judged on a variety of criteria including sustainability, creativity and legacy, and celebrate “forward-thinking design and leadership in architecture,” the association says.

The Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex was designed by Kongats Architects of Toronto. The four-storey complex houses the Mississauga Academy of Medicine as well as the Master of Science in Biomedical Communications Program, Department of Anthropology offices, research labs and medical teaching classrooms.

Other winners include the Lawren Harris House and TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, the Ottawa Convention Centre and Bluepoint Pavilion in Phuket, Thailand. The awards will be handed out May 11 at the OAA Celebration of Excellence in Ottawa. The Ontario Association of Architects is a self-regulating, self-governing profession under the Architects Act.
