:: Meet The UTM Chaplain

The UTM Chaplain, the Reverend Jason van Veghel-Wood, is the senior Chaplain at UTM who heads up the UTM Multifaith Association. Jason was sent to UTM by the Anglican Diocese of Toronto to serve the students and staff. As Senior Chaplain, he presides at our services together, coordinates programmes like 'Chaplain's Table' interfaith worship services, group discussions, prepares people for sacraments, and meets with students, faculty and staff one-on-one for teaching, advising, pastoral care and counselling, and support in crises. He is available to help you regardless of whether you are or are not actively involved in a faith community.

Jason is an ordained priest, which means he is officially authorized by the Anglican Church to serve as priest. He also provides interfaith services and programmes and serves as an umbrella for all religious life on the campus.

The UTM Chaplain serves the wider community in other ways, too, like helping with orientation, serving on committees, and working on programmes with other church, religious and charitable organizations. The UTM Chaplain reaches beyond traditional religious groups to that which concerns us in all aspects of university endeavour and in our relations with surrounding communities. This includes teaching, community service, counselling, and helping to promote a positive ethical climate for UTM. The UTM Chaplain and the Multifaith Association uphold UTM's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He encourages student efforts in community service, and also seeks to encourage and facilitate the work of students seeking to address issues of social concern among the UTM community.

The UTM Chaplain also works ecumenically to encourage the involvement of students, faculty, and staff in regular worship and in a variety of student religious groups on campus by offering study groups, retreats, speakers, and social gatherings.
