Bio

In 2011, Alex graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelors of Management degree, with a major in Sustainable Resource and Environmental Management. During her studies and volunteer work, Alex developed a strong interest in sustainability matters such as: green building and renovations, renewable energy, commercial and domestic resource consumption reduction, RRR (reduce, re-use, recycle) and closed-loop mentality maximization, sustainable materials sourcing, active transportation, and sustainability investing.

In her last year of her Bachelors, she volunteered on a weekly basis at The Ecology Action Centre, a local environmental organization, while maintaining a full course load. She assisted the outreach and office coordinators with general office work and customer service, as well as aiding the centres various committees with research and campaign work, with a prominent contribution to the annual “Green Your Christmas” campaign.

Also in her last year, Alex assisted her professor in a research project investigating the local social values associated with the urban forest, carried out to submit to the regional municipality. She performed sidewalk interruption surveys to collect the raw data, executed raw data analysis, carried out research, and contributed to the writing of the final report resulting in publication.

After graduating, Alex moved to Thailand to get her TEFL certification and teach English. She was the homeroom English teacher for two years at a private bilingual school, where she was responsible for planning, preparing, and conducting 15 lessons per week for her class of 25 students, on top of general classroom and school responsibilities. In her spare time she joined a weekly group “clean-up the beach" effort preserving the beauty and health of Phuket's local beaches.

Upon returning to Canada, Alex continued her teaching career and balanced teaching ESL, lifeguarding, and counselling at a Canadian summer camp for international children.

Alex hopes to further develop her skills, knowledge, and experience in sustainability management through the MScSM program, to prepare her for a future career in a sustainability consulting or managing position upon graduation.
