David Hageraats

Bachelor of Science, Biodiversity and Conservation/Biology • McGill University

David grew up in the Ottawa Valley with lots of exposure to the outdoors. His curiosity and interest in cultural diversity took him to Montreal where he studied Environmental Science at McGill University. During his degree David volunteered with Canada World Youth in an intensive cultural exchange program between Quebec and French West Africa. This valuable experience in personal development and leadership widened his perspectives on sustainability issues, and pushed him to look deeper into these complex problems. In his upper-year of undergraduate, he took the opportunity to complete academic exchange in Panamá where he interned with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and gained research and project development experience. Following graduation in 2015, David’s interest in youth empowerment led him to working at an alternative high school for at-risk youth. Over the course of 2 years in many different roles, he gained experience in group facilitation, conflict management, and leadership development. Feeling a need to re-connect with his environmental science background, David relocated to the city of Ottawa where he immediately began consulting work with a start-up alternative energy company. With multidisciplinary experience and dedication to sustainable development, David decided the MScSM program was the right fit to achieve his professional goals. Following this program, David aspires to work as a sustainability consultant, start his own business, and focus on increasing access to alternative education.

In his spare time, David enjoys being active through sports, appreciating the outdoors, and connecting with his community. He is also a passionate whitewater canoeist, kayaker and instructor, and continues to explore the many breath-taking rivers of Quebec and Ontario.
