Biopartnering Seminar - An Assessment of Expanding Patient Services at Shoppers Drug Mart Retail Locations

The scope of pharmacy practice is increasing across Canada, and the role of pharmacists in offering affordable and convenient health care services is growing. Top Tier Think Tank is exploring the case for Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM) to expand patient services to include either infusion or injection clinics at retail locations. Infusion services would be for specialty medications, whereas injection services would be for any therapeutic administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. In our assessment of these patient services, we considered infrastructure, safety, patient experience, and the pharmaceutical pipelines as our decision criteria. Upon analysis of these criteria, we found the case for injection services to be favoured in SDM retail locations. Due to the expanded scope of pharmacist practice in Alberta, we then identified Calgary as the location for a pilot study to investigate the business potential of injection clinics. In interviewing SDM pharmacists, we identified areas of growth and improvement in the injectable medicines market. SDM could take advantage of these via a marketing campaign aimed at increasing utilization of pharmacist-administered injection services in these areas. Additionally, by taking advantage of the expanded scope of practice and favourable provincial reimbursement scheme in Alberta, we build a value proposition by modeling revenue generation for an injection clinic at a retail location in Calgary. Our findings provide evidence for a positive business case for injection clinics in SDM retail stores in Alberta, and we believe that SDM can eventually capitalize on the changing scope of practice for pharmacists across Canada.
