Decision Points: Successfully Navigating your Career as an MBiotech Graduate in the Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industry‚Äč - Jeffrey Launay - Director, Commercial Effectiveness - Purdue Pharma 

Abstract:
The Master of Biotechnology Program attracts students with a wide variety of backgrounds and provides an outstanding breadth of exposure and experience for its graduates, positioning them well for long and successful careers in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry. As one embarks on their career as a graduate from the MBiotech program, there are a series of important decisions that will need to be made. These decisions can be challenging and exciting and each result in a vastly different career journey. Should I consider a ‘big pharma’ or smaller company? Is a role in Pharmaceutical Sales right for me? Should I pursue a career in Commercial, Medical or another area of the industry? What are the benefits of international experience and when should this be considered? These and many other questions are often contemplated at different points in the career journey. These and related questions will be explored, all from the perspective of an MBiotech graduate who has lived  it and loved every step along the way.

Bio:
A graduate from the MBiotech program in 2005, Jeffrey completed his MBiotech internship at Patheon Canada Market Research. He spent 4 years in a series of progressive positions at Patheon, including a rotation with Patheon UK based in London, England. Prior to leaving Patheon, Jeffrey was leading the Market Research group responsible for meeting the market research needs of the global organization.  After a rewarding experience at Patheon, Jeffrey was looking to move into a global pharmaceutical organization and was interested in a role in Pharmaceutical Sales. He started at GlaxoSmithKline Canada as a Territory Representative in 2007. His talents were quickly recognized at GSK and he was enrolled into the National Esprit Program, an accelerated leadership development program. Following his first role at GSK in sales, he worked in National Health Policy, Primary Care Marketing and Specialty Care and Oncology Marketing. He was recognized at GSK as a Regional Top Performer in Sales and received two GSK Spirit Awards in Marketing for entrepreneurship and innovation. In an effort to further develop his skills and knowledge, he completed a rotation with the US Oncology Marketing Team, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jeffrey returned to Canada as a National Sales Manager, Oncology with GSK before moving to Novartis Oncology as an Associate Sales Director. Jeffrey is currently Director, Commercial Effectiveness at Purdue Pharma Canada, leading a group responsible for all Commercial Operations at Purdue, including Sales Training, Market Research & Analysis, Commercial Compliance and Commercial Systems Administration & Reporting.
