Math Circles

Mathematics is the art of inquiry and problem-solving. If you are a high school student interested in enriching your exposure to modern mathematics, Math Circles may be for you!

Math Circles began in Moscow in the 1950s, as an enrichment program for bright mathematics students; the class prepared for problem-solving competitions and engaged in studying extracurricular mathematical topics. The success of Math Circles expanded to an international phenomenon that is now taught in schools and universities around the world. Read more about the history of Math Circles.

Join us each week to work with professors and students from UTM’s Mathematics and Computer Science Department, on mathematical puzzles selected from a variety of disciplines, such as combinatorics, geometry, algebra, and number theory. We will cover topics that you won’t learn in a typical high school curriculum, so expect to challenge yourself and wrap your brain around new ways of thinking.

At the end of the academic year, those students with regular attendance will receive an official certificate of participation.

Math Circles will be held in-person on the UTM Campus, starting in October 2023. Complete the registration form and join the mailing list for updates on timing and location, and to indicate your availabilities. See "How do I Register for Math Circles?"

Math Circles meets on Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The first meeting is Tuesday, October 17th 2023, and the last meeting will be in April 2024, with a break during the winter holiday.

The meeting room is Maanjiwe Nendamowinan (MN) 2170 on the UTM campus. The MN building has a nice pickup/dropoff spot right along Outer Circle Rd. View a UTM interactive map here or see the image below.
