UCS hosts end-of-summer networking event

Before heading off to class in September, undergraduate students, who are focused on careers in commerce and accounting, had another opportunity to hone their networking skills at Commerce Cares last Friday. 

Over 50 students, representatives and organizers spent the afternoon at the annual accounting event at Erindale Park where attendees partook in friendly games of soccer and ultimate Frisbee with KPMG and TD Bank representatives.

Kevin Warner, accounting director of the Undergraduate Commerce Society (UCS), helped organize the event, and described it as fun yet professional despite the mid-afternoon summer heat.

“Although the temperature rose to above 30 degrees, the attendees enjoyed the event as a whole, and lots of professional connections were made,” he said.

“Students were able to talk to reps in a less formal setting in comparison to the traditional networking event; they enjoyed this aspect as they were able to get to know the reps a lot better.”

Fourth-year accounting specialist Zeeshan Khan attended the event in the hopes of speaking to recruiters directly and asking questions about the company he was interested in.

He received tips regarding the application process and the competencies he would need to demonstrate in his application such as face-to-face customer relationship experience.

“I used to be really shy and not say anything at these events,” he said. “But the casual atmosphere made it fun and the representatives were really nice."
