U of T Mississauga hosts Health in the City

Jane Stirling

Tour Mississauga’s new medical academy and chat with your future physicians; visit a mini-crime scene and analyze blood stains; help plant 100 trees and re-naturalize campus; discover the impact of stress on your mental and physical health; learn about the art of healthy living; talk to researchers and see their laboratories where they combat disease and improve quality of life. All these events and more will be part of a Health in the City open house – offered in partnership with members of the Healthy City Stewardship Centre – at the University of Toronto Mississauga on Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The full-day health and wellness event, organized as part of Science Rendezvous 2012, will feature a full slate of displays, demonstrations, lectures, tours and hands-on activities for the whole family at locations across campus. Some of the individual events include:

  • Mini-lectures on topics such as Stress and its Impact on Mental and Physical Health; The Search for a Magic Bullet to Tame Cancer; and Active Lifestyles for Successful Aging
  • Tours of the Terrence Donnelly Health Sciences Complex; research laboratories including anthropology, physics, biology and chemistry; underground geothermal installations
  • Outdoor activities for children and families such as Planting Adventure, Exploring Water Quality, and Drawing With Your Ears: Sounds of Wildlife
  • Interactive science demonstrations
  • Forensic science in action: fingerprinting, footwear impressions, hair and fibre analysis, identification of animal and human bones
