Turbo Party!

Nicolle Wahl

It lasted all of six minutes, but by the time it was over, there were balloons, cookies and smiles everywhere.

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre decided to get a little...unorthodox. Music-really LOUD music-in the Library? Yelling? Clapping? Even...dancing? With the study break setting in, library staff decided to give students a few minutes to chill out, de-stress and laugh. Chief Librarian Mary Ann Mavrinac gave two pre-party announcements over the library loudspeakers, luring a crowd of curious students into the RBC Learning Commons.

At the stroke of noon, Mavrinac took to the microphone, thanking students for their five years of library patronage. Then, it got loud-music erupted from massive speakers, librarians appeared with noisemakers, helium balloons and 1,000 cookies for the students crowding around the main floor.

Students danced, snapped photos on their cellphones and helped themselves to the cookies. "Never saw this side of the library before lol Partyyyy haha," one student posted on the U of T Mississauga Facebook page. "Yay thanks someone brought me cookies they're quite delish," tweeted another student.

But in a flash, it was over-after all, the library is for studying, and students are prepping for exams. But the balloons and remaining trays of cookies stayed behind for other students arriving at the library.
