Sneaker Squad UTM

Take a walk with UTM Principal Deep Saini

Blake Eligh

Want a chance to chat with U of T Mississauga Principal Deep Saini? Pull on your sneakers and come out for a Sneaker Squad walk, where Professor Saini will be the featured guest on Monday, March 30.

The student-led exercise group is part of a MoveU initiative to help students get active at UTM. Twice a week, the Sneaker Squad meets at the bottom of the RAWC stairs and heads out for 30- to  45-minute walks along different routes across campus and through neighbourhoods and trails around the university

“Getting moving on a regular basis improves physical and mental well-being, and can have a positive impact on academic success,” says Sneaker Squad leader and fourth-year theatre student Madeleine Brown. “It promotes social and healthy activity, and is a great way to meet other students.”

Brown says she likes the camaraderie of the group, and says that it keeps her motivated to get outside and enjoy the winter weather. “As students, we have such busy schedules, but taking time out to exercise can really help you focus and feel better about yourself.”

The walks are a great way to meet staff and faculty, too. Sneaker Squad often features a special guest, giving everyone a chance to have an informal chat outside the classroom.

For those who want to move a little faster, the Sneaker Squad also hosts a learn-to-run program. Beginner runners learn proper warm-up and stretching techniques, and how to build up to running 5km.

Both programs are free, and operate on a drop-in basis. Check out the Sneaker Squad Facebook page for meeting times.

Learn To Run: Monday and Wednesday, RAWC track, 5:10 p.m. and Fridays at 12:10 p.m.
