The provincial government unveiled its Ontario tuition grant to U of T Mississauga faculty, staff and students at an event today in the Communications, Culture and Technology Building.

Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and Harinder Takhar, Minister of Government Services and Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale, visited campus to promote the grant and its benefits to eligible students.

"We are keeping our promise to make a real difference in the cost of tuition for undergraduate students and their families," said Murray. "This grant means that eligible students will enjoy the lowest tuition costs in the past 10 years. We are being fiscally responsible while at the same time making a profound difference for the students and families who need the financial assistance."

The grant will provide $800 for eligible undergraduate students at UTM this semester. In September, the grant will apply to the full academic year. Students could be eligible if:

• They are a full-time student at a public college or university in Ontario
• It's been less than four years since they left high school
• They are in a program that they can apply to directly from high school
• Their parents' gross income is $160,000 or less

"The Ontario tuition grant is welcome news for Ontario students," said Professor Deep Saini, vice-president of U of T and principal of U of T Mississauga. "It will provide thousands of students with additional financial assistance to attend an institution of higher learning in the province, offering them opportunities for a brighter future."

Fourth-year UTM student Madison Peters said she is grateful for the tuition assistance. "It will help keep the cost of my post-secondary education within my reach and help me to maintain my focus on my studies and my future."

Takhar said the grant "is part of our government's commitment to create the best-educated workforce in the world by giving our students every opportunity to succeed."
