A record number of new students at U of T Mississauga have received entrance scholarships this fall.

The scholarships, which range in value from $1,000 to $3,000, will go to 625 students who began their studies in September. In addition, 53 current students, who all had a CGPA of 3.85 or above, will receive in-course scholarships.

The students’ success was acknowledged at an Oct. 10 reception hosted by University of Toronto President David Naylor, and Deep Saini, vice-president and principal, University of Toronto Mississauga.

In congratulating the students, Saini encouraged them to explore opportunities for research through the university’s Research Opportunities Program.

“The ROP provides students with the opportunity to build a strong relationship with their instructors, to learn about exciting new developments in their research field, and to explore new areas of interest,” he said.

In addition to networking with professors and teaching assistants, he encouraged the students to reach beyond the classroom.

“Take part in the extracurricular life offered here. Sports, recreation, clubs and societies. There is a lot to do,” he said. “Our most successful students are those who lift their heads from a book from time to time and become involved.”

U of T Chancellor Michael Wilson congratulated the recipients on being at the top of their class and said he looks forward to seeing them at convocation in a few years. He also offered this advice: “Find something you love doing, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
