Autumn brings busy roster of 50th anniversary events

Nicolle Wahl

As July rolls into August, the 50th anniversary celebrations at UTM are kicking into high gear. Numerous events on and around campus will highlight not only aspects of the campus’ history, but the important role that UTM plays in teaching, research, the arts, business and global current affairs. The fall will include a high-profile 50th anniversary gala.

Here’s a look at some of the events taking place in the months ahead:

  • Smarti Gras—On Aug. 16, celebrate the hard work of current summer students working in labs/departments or in UTM’s Research Opportunity Program. Take a look at their research results, and enjoy a barbecue lunch, free ice cream, popcorn and a DJ.
  • UTM ART50—Departments, student clubs and societies will come together to celebrate the humanities at UTM on Sept. 13. Enjoy performances, participatory activities and installations.
  • Film Festival—Walk the red carpet, and enjoy UTM’s very own film festival! In September, October and November, the Department of Visual Studies will screen a variety of films on campus and in the surrounding community, and offer a Q&A with the director or star.
  • Canada’s Changing Arctic: Walking on thin ice—Engage in a discussion about one of the most critical issues of our time—climate change. On Sept. 21 and 22, Canada’s Changing Arctic: Walking on thin ice will tackle this important topic in a public lecture and symposium.
  • 3rd Annual Bank of Canada Conference—For the first time ever, one of the top global conferences on the Chinese economy will be hosted at UTM. On Sept. 29 & 30, IMI and the Department of Economics will host meetings focusing on China’s transition from production-based to innovation-based growth.
  • MMI 10th—Celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Master of Management of Innovation program, on Oct. 4 at the Glenerin Inn.
  • Poles Apart: 50 years of magnetic resonance and life science—Celebrate research excellence during this scientific symposium and student poster event on Oct. 12.
  • Global50—A vibrant, multi-day event in October and November will recognize the vibrancy of language studies at UTM and U of T. This initiative will bring together alumni, students, and the Italian, French, theatre and film communities.
  • Past, Present and Future in Our Urban Environment—Hosted by the Centre for Urban Environment, this one-day symposium will highlight the interactions between our city, UTM and the surrounding environment.
