Library Reference & Research joins Facebook
ANDREW NICHOLSON

Interested in learning more about new resources and services at the U of T Mississauga Library? Consider becoming our Facebook friend.

The Library's Facebook page aims to raise the visibility of our Reference and Research services and staff among our many "friends" within the campus community. It is another way to emphasize that "Research is within Reach" whenever you interact with our Reference staff either in person or online.

New Library Catalogue
PAM KING

With its flexible functionality and clean layout, the U of T Library's new online catalogue continues to impress. Although no hard data exists, anecdotal evidence suggests students relate better to the new layout, launched in Janurary 2009. Some may have experienced a period of adjustment — when search results were surprising and search strategies needed tweaking, but the benefits of the faceted approach are significant. Narrowing searches using the facet lists to the left of the search results is an effective way to target specific items.

The new catalogue offers users various options. For instance:

  • Use the Advance search options to discover specific components of the collection. For example, use the Advance search fields "Format" and "Library" to easily discover the number of DVDs in the U of T Mississauga Library's collection. You may be surprised to find that the U of T Mississauga Library has a growing number of DVDs in many languages.
  • Locating electronic items and online descriptions is much easier with the new catalogue. Links to electronic content appear clearly at the top level of a results list.

  • Managing and saving item descriptions is much easier with the top level availability of functions such as e-mail, print, save and export located under the large
blue eye eye icon and the "Marked Records" tab at the top of the search results.
