Annual Awards Evening

Since May 2006, the Department of Language Studies has been holding annual student awards evening, with reception and operatic concert.  The Department honors outstanding students, Course Instructors and Teaching Assistants at this ceremony.  Students, parents, donors, members of the communities attend the event.


Awards Evening and Music Gala 2013

The Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) hosted its Annual Awards Evening and Music Gala on Friday, October 25, 2013.
This by invitation-only event recognized distinguished students within the Department of Language Studies and CTEP (Concurrent Teacher Education Program) who excelled in their programs and/or courses of study, as well as course instructors who have demonstrated excellence in the performance of their teaching duties.
The awards were awarded in the following areas of study: Modern Languages (Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi, Latin, Persian and Spanish), French Studies, Italian Studies, Language Teaching and Learning, and Linguistics.
In addition to students and their guests, the evening was attended by the UTM’s officials (Prof. Amy Mullin, Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean), the faculty and by the esteemed sponsors of various awards and scholarships.  Among numerous Italian scholarships were: IC Savings and Credit Union Language Studies Travel Scholarship, Mississauga Italian Canadian Benevolent Association Scholarship (recipient Katharine Wilson), and Sharp Electronics of Canada Limited Scholarship (recipient Angela Wu).  Among French prizes: David Trott French Prize (recipient Edoardo Leone), and Howard Root Memorial Award (recipient Lakshmi Kamala).
The event also featured a musical concert with multicultural performances by UofT Faculty of Music students: pianist Lisa Tahara (who performed “Clair de Lune” by Debussy), flutist Jessica Leung, violinist Kathryn Wiebe (who performed “Love Theme-Cinema Paradiso” by Ennio Morricone), accordionist Michael Bridge (performing “Tango La cumparsita” by Gerardo Rodriguez), and setarist Sepideh Raissadat (performing traditional Persian composition).

Awards Evening and Music Gala 2012

The Department of Languages at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) hosted its Annual Awards Evening and Music Gala on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in lecture hall CCT 1080, CCT Building. 

This celebration recognized distinguished students within the Department of Language Studies and CTEP (Concurrent Teacher Education Program) who excelled in their programs and/or courses of study, as well as instructors and teaching assistants who have demonstrated excellence in the performance of their teaching duties.

In addition to students and their guests, the evening was attended by the UTM’s officials, the faculty and by the esteemed sponsors of various awards and prizes.  The event also featured a musical concert, featuring a classical tenor James Ciantar, a mezzo-soprano Christina Stelmacovich, and other well-known performers.
