China - EDS388H5S: Experiential Learning Opportunity within the Community

The Course

This internship is a minimum 100-hour experiential learning opportunity. The internship connects the students subject specialization to aspects of the teaching/training development profession. It will integrate, extend, and deepen the learning experience as students begin to identify particular academic or professional insights. Prior to enrollment, internship proposals must be approved by the program coordinator.

Exclusion: CTE388H5, 388Y5

Recommended Prep: EDS200H5, 210H5, 220H5, EDS300H5 (may be taken as a co-requisite).

The Trip

Students from the Education minor will spend approximately 3-4 weeks tutoring, co-teaching, and supporting student learning at Chinese boarding schools in Mainland China including the 271 Education Group, Hansen International School in Weifang, Shandong Province & Changle Middle School #2 in Changle, Shandong Province. During this experience, you will apply what you have learned in the classroom helping to develop lesson plans, delivering parts of the curriculum, helping students further develop their English skills, and engaging in a mutual learning exchange with local instructors. You will stay in the schools dormitories, share your meals with the students and instructors, and immerse yourself in a different classroom environment all while discovering everything the province of Shandong has to offer!

Activities Include

  • Work with individual and small groups of students;
  • Observations of specified students during class time; 
  • Guided reading program with small groups of students;
  • Withdrawal of small groups for extra help;
  • Develop learning centres aligned with learning goals of the classroom;
  • Develop "minds on" activities to be taught to class;
  • Conduct after-school English Corner activities;
  • Facilitate learning conversations.

Important Details

Dates: Saturday, May 5, 2018 (depart) to Sunday, June 3, 2018 (return) 

Estimated cost of International Component*: CAD$2500-2800 - includes flights, transportation, accommodation, meals and in-country activities associated with the course. Funding Available!

*The amount posted is currently under review by the University Business Board. Approved amounts will be confirmed in March 2018. 

** This experience is offered with the generous support of the Office of the Dean, which means;

  • All undergraduate UTM students enrolled in the course will receive $500 towards the international component of the course, should their application be successful.
  • Plus, additional bursaries will be awarded based on demonstrated financial need (not linked to OSAP) as shown in your funding request in your UTM Abroad application.

Selection criteria: The international component of this course is open to students enrolled in EDS388H5S and/or those approved by UTM Abroad and the course instructor. Interested students will be required to abide by the application requirements and deadlines. Applicants will be selected based on their application.

Itinerary

While placements will vary depending on student preferences and the needs of the local schools, the following structure will be implemented when possible:

Monday to Thursday

You will be paired up with a local English-speaking instructor for the duration of the internship. During class time you will shadow the instructor and support the delivery of their lesson plans engaging in all aspects of the curriculum delivery including co-planning, co-teaching, and co-debriefing. In the evenings, you will submit reflections and reports to your UTM faculty as required by the course.

Friday to Sunday

Weekends have been left open for you to enjoy the beauty of the city, explore its surroundings, or engage in school activities that may be of interest.
