International & New-to-Canada Student Buddy Program

Are you an international student, permanent resident, new immigrant, or exchange student looking to make connections with domestic students on campus and meeting new people from around the world?

The International Education Centre is launching a new International & New-to-Canada Student Buddy Program! In this program, you will be paired with an upper year domestic or international student from a different part of the world. They will be there as a friend and support as you start your new journey in Mississuga.

Benefits of joining our buddy program:

  1. Expand your network and meet new people from around the world with similar interests;
  2. Benefit from the support and experiences of upper year domestic and international students and learn how to get involved on campus;
  3. Having support in regards to culture, language, and life at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and Mississauga;
  4. Both volunteers and incoming students will receive Co-Curricular Record (CCR) credit for participation in the program.

Possible activities for buddies:

  1. Help incoming students locate grocery stores (including culture specific locations), pharmacies, banks, etc.;
  2. Show the buddies around UTM and Mississauga;
  3. Meet up for coffee/ tea/ bubble tea;
  4. Come to our Introductory Buddy Program Social, other IEC events, and the Final Buddy Program Social.

For those that apply in the summer months, upper year volunteers and incoming students will be paired up before the start of school in September so that you have the time to contact each other before classes begin. For those applying at the start of September, you will be paired up on a rolling basis. Applications will remain open until the end of the Fall semester for those that will be starting classes in January.
