Position Overview
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position to contribute to research on the future of cities, urban economic geography and urban innovation.
The research program is led by Professor Shauna Brail at the Institute for Management & Innovation, University of Toronto Mississauga. The successful candidate will join her research team for a two-year term (with the possibility of renewal).
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at the Institute for Management & Innovation (University of Toronto Mississauga) and will have opportunities to engage with interdisciplinary researchers in multiple departments across the tri-campus University of Toronto. The Postdoctoral Fellow may affiliate themselves with the Innovation Policy Lab, Institute for Pandemics, Mobility Network and the School of Cities. Description of Duties
The successful candidate will act as project manager for Professor Brail’s research portfolio and will conduct research on cities, urban economic geography, urban innovation and urban recovery post-covid. The Postdoctoral Fellow will author journal articles, develop conference presentations and support the writing and development of research grant proposals. The candidate will support knowledge transfer through a range of activities including the writing of op eds, use of social media, and participation in community events. The Postdoctoral Fellow will provide training and support for undergraduate and graduate student researchers and will contribute to managing the research team.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be supervised by Professor Brail and will contribute to a subset of her research projects. Current and funded research projects include studies of:
- Urban innovation & digital platforms
- Emerging mobility technologies, governance and cities
- Post-COVID recovery, resilience and sustainability in global cities
- Placemaking practices in post-covid cities & in marginalized spaces
Required qualifications
- PhD degree in geography, planning, public policy, urban studies or related field awarded within past 5 years.
- Extensive knowledge in a subset of the following: urban economic geography; urban planning; urban policy and governance; urban innovation and platform urbanism.
- Demonstrated expertise in qualitative research and analysis, including interviewing, coding and analysis of qualitative data.
- Demonstrated familiarity in assessing and interpreting socioeconomic data from both traditional and novel data sources.
- Experience in research design.
- Excellent written and oral communication in English.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Evidence of knowledge translation.
- Excellent personal time management, project management and organizational skills.
Salary
$60,000/ year + conference travel + benefits + 15 days of vacation
Please note that should the minimum rates stipulated in the collective agreement fall below the rates stated in this posting, the minimum rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
The successful candidate will be eligible to apply for additional travel and research supports designated for Postdoctoral Fellow based at UTM.

The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.
Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.
