3. Business Arising from the Minutes

a) Accident Reports There had been three staff related accidents reported since the last meeting, two requiring health care, and one involving lost time.

b) Designated non-smoking entrances - Residence buildings New posters and pamphlets were available for distribution.

c) Smoking - Weedless Wednesday and Leave the Pack Behind, January 21, 2009 There had been a good response to this event, and everyone was thanked for their assistance. It was noted that the markings indicating the 9 metres from the building were a good idea and would be painted permanently.

4. New Business

a) Certified members Laura MacDonald is working with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to get the proper documentation for those who have completed the basic (Part 1) certification. In December 2007, members were told that three courses would be sufficient to obtain Part 2 certification and Environmental Health and Safety will honour that. However, anyone seeking certification now for Part 2 must complete at least 5 courses. These courses are specific to each workplace and the Committee can determine which ones are appropriate. Sandy, Rob, Adrian, Rubina and Len have all completed the requirements for Part 2 certification; however, nothing has been received from WSIB to confirm this.

b) JH&SC Co-chairs Sandy advised the Committee that she will be stepping down as the worker co-chair. Sandy will notify worker representatives of a meeting so that a new co-chair can be elected. Len has agreed to continue as management co-chair for the next year but would like to turn it over to another management member next year.

Louise also indicated that she can no longer continue to take the minutes for the meetings.

c) Ladder safety training Laura MacDonald is coordinating this training for Residence staff and for others who use ladders.

d) WHMIS training for Caretaking staff Rubina had conducted her first training course for the caretaking staff.

e) Central Records of training completed Laura MacDonald advised that she has been exploring the possibility of having health and safety training (first aid, CPR, Fire safety, train the trainer, etc.) recorded in official staff (HR) records. She is working on this with members of Human Resources at UTM and on the St. George campus, as well as with members of her own department.

5. Other Business/Announcements The meeting adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
