Minutes: November 30, 2006

Report: November 30, 2006.

MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING OF ERINDALE COLLEGE COUNCIL, held on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 212.00 p.m., in Rm. 3129, South Building.

Present: R. Beck (in the Chair), C. Misak, A. Wensley, R. deSouza

The Executive Committee met to set the agenda for the December 8, 2006 meeting of Erindale College Council. Professor Beck called on the Chair of each standing committee to summarize recent business and identify items for possible inclusion on the next ECC agenda.

It was noted that the Computing Committee meeting, scheduled for November 29, 2006, had been cancelled and, hence, there was no report.

On behalf of the Resource Planning & Priorities Committee, Professor Wensley reported that the Committee had met on November 20, 2006. At that meeting, members had received reports for information. They had been updated on the South Building Master Plan, the Storm Water Management Pond, the state of U of T Mississauga’s ancillaries, and transportation and parking on campus.

On behalf of the Academic Affairs Committee, Professor Wensley reported that the Committee had met on November 28, 2006 to approve the Curriculum Reports. The Sciences and Humanities Curriculum Reports had been approved. However, there were issues arising from the Social Sciences Curriculum Report which had been sent back for further clarification. Committee members had expressed concerns about the proposal to change SOC 101Y (a full-year course) to SOC 100H5 (a half-year course). Professor Wensley reported that further clarification was being sought from the Department of Sociology, and a special meeting of the Academic Affairs Committee might be warranted before the next meeting of ECC. He also observed that members had raised concern about the redesignation of NDA courses (many in CCT) as S.Sc. courses, noting that some seemed more appropriately designated HUM. Professor Wensley had approached Professor Kaplan about the possibility of withdrawing these changes from the Social Sciences Curriculum Report for this year, to be discussed by both the Social Sciences and Humanities Curriculum Committees in 2007-08. He was awaiting Professor Kaplan’s formal response. It was also felt that CCT 314H5 – Representation in Language, Mind & Arts – which was designated S.Sc. should be designated HUM as it was clearly a Philosophy course. Professor Wensley had requested clarification from Professor Michael Lettieri in this regard.

Professor Misak reported that students were currently not unhappy regarding the childcare issue, and was confident that this would not be raised at the next ECC meeting.

It was agreed that the newly appointed Director of the Academy of Medicine at the University of Toronto Mississauga, Dr. Pam Coates, should be invited to attend a future ECC meeting. She would be introduced to members as part of the Vice-President & Principal’s Report.

The Executive Committee meeting adjourned at 12.25 p.m. (A. Wensley/C. Misak)
