Biography

Professor Judith Poë (M.Sc., DIC, FCIC), Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences (Interim Chair 2008-2009), is experienced in university governance having chaired the Erindale College Council (1986-1992 and 1998-2003) and served on the Academic Board (2007-2013). She did her undergraduate studies in chemistry and her graduate work in biochemistry at Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London before joining the University of Toronto faculty.

Trained as a bioinorganic chemist with interests in the mechanisms of catalysis by copper and iron containing metalloenzymes, Ms Poë’s current research and scholarly activity are in the area of chemical education focusing on web-enhanced teaching and learning, writing as a tool for learning and Problem-Based Learning. She is an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Science Education and Technology. A President’s Teaching Academy member, she has received numerous other teaching awards including the OCUFA Teaching Award, a 3M Teaching Fellow ship and the Union Carbide Award for Chemical Education. Ms Poë served as President of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (1999-2000) and is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Chemical Education Trust Fund. She is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.  She is also the recipient of the 2014 Canadian Society for Chemistry Faculty Advisor Award, which is an award based on nominations from students.

Professor Poë was elected to the Campus Council in 2013, and subsequently appointed to the AAC as a teaching staff member and as its Chair. She has also served on the Agenda Committee as the Chair of the AAC and is in her second term, which ends on June 30, 2018.
