Biography

Mr. Varty led and oversaw the delivery of professional services at KMPG as Partner, Audit for over 30 years.  Mr. Varty holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto Mississauga (1981) and has been involved in mentoring a number of commerce students from UTM for many years.   He also served as the National Chair for the KPMG Partner for Life Campaign with Canadian Blood Services.  Mr. Varty is enjoying early retirement in order to spend more time pursuing his business, community and personal interests as a mentor to business students. 

Mr. Varty is a member of the Fundraising and Communications Committee, Nature Conservancy of Canada, an Ontario Council Member for the Association of Canadian Pension Management (APCM) and a mentor for the Show Me The Green Competition at UTM.  He also volunteers as a ski instructor at Ontario Track 3 Ski Association for the Disabled.     Mr. Varty’s daughter is a student at UTM and is the third generation of the family to have the privilege of attending
U of T.  

Mr. Varty was first appointed in 2014 as alumni member of Campus Council, with a term ending June 30, 2017.

Biography

Mr. Thompson served as Deputy Minister in Ontario under Premiers from all three political parties and has a useful perspective on the working world graduates will join.  He is a social worker that has mentored recent graduates form the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto for the past number of years.  Mr. Thompson has had a rewarding career in public service and was the Deputy Minister for six provincial portfolios including; Housing, Labour, Municipal Affairs, Government Services, Energy and Correctional Services in the span of 16 years.  He previously led the Canadian Mental Health Association as Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Thompson received the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal of Distinction in Public Administration (2000) in recognition of public service work in Ontario and the Centennial Medial conferred by the Governor General of Canada for his work within the children and adult sectors of the Ministry of Correctional Services, Ontario.       

Mr. Thompson and his wife enjoy focusing on volunteer activities in the community such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and other non-profit organizations including Canadian Criminal Justice Association, Ontario Association for Corrections and Criminology, and many more. He is also a member of the Fund Development Committee at the Faculty of Social Work.  Mr. Thompson is serving his first term as member of UTM Campus Council.

Biography

 

A graduate from the University of Toronto, Nick Kuryluk is the Chief Executive Officer at ColdBlock Technologies Inc.  Nick is also co-founder and Principal at Virtus Insights Inc., a strategic management firm. 

Nick’s career has largely focused on the bio-science industry. He helped launch Amgen Canada in 1991 where he established the Strategy and Program Management Office and New Products Commercialization function. In 2014, Nick formed ColdBlock Technologies Inc., manufacturers of a novel and innovate sample digestion technology that serves the mining, environmental, food, agriculture and pharmaceutical industries. 

Nick currently serves on several boards and committees in addition to serving as an alumni member of the Governing Council for the University of Toronto. Currently, he is Chair of the Campus Council at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), member of the UTM Campus Affairs Committee and Cabinet Member of UTM’s Boundless Campaign.  He has received several awards for his dedication and contribution to the university, including the 2016 J. Tuzo Wilson Distinguished Alumni Award, the 2009 Arbor Award for volunteerism and the 2009 Top 40 Alumni Award.  He is a volunteer advisor at Mississauga’s Research Innovation and Commercialization Centre (RIC), and Student Mentor at UTM’s “I-Cube” incubator program.

Biography

Neil Davis is an experienced and sought after advocate in land matters and represents land developers and real estate owners on all aspects of their activities. He also advises businesses on corporate and commercial matters and represents many individuals who are long-time firm clients. He is counsel and advisor to many public, political and charitable organizations. Neil was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 in recognition of his service to the community and to Canada.

Mr. Davis’ service to his community, includes the following: past member, board of governors, Sheridan College; counsel/advisor, Peel Children's Village; co-chair, PMH corporate fundraising campaign; board member, Supportive Housing in Peel; advisor, Brampton and Area Community Foundation, advisor, Success by Six Peel; committee member, Brampton Board of Trade; member, Mayor's Roundtable for the Downtown; board member, Crisis Care Access Centre Peel; board of trustees, Grace United Church; along with dozens more. As a member of the Davis Volunteer Cabinet, Neil provided strategic counsel and actively participated in the fundraising campaign in tribute of his father, the Honorable William G. Davis. Mr. Davis’ involvement on the UTM Campus Council would be an extension of his community involvement and volunteerism.

Biography

Dr. Akers completed her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Akers is well known in the Raman spectroscopy field and has published in many refereed journals including "Science" and the "Journal of Physical Chemistry".  Dr. Akers founded ProSpect Scientific Inc. in 1996 to equip university research labs with a new generation of Raman spectroscopy solutions.  Today, ProSpect Scientific has consultative supply relationships with over 40 universities, law enforcement agencies, chemical companies and technology companies.  Dr. Akers is a frequent speaker at Canadian chemistry conferences and she served more than five years with CNC-IUPAC as an international representative of Canadian science.  She is a supporter of forums that promote women in science and innovative collaboration between industry and academia.  

Dr. Aker’s previous assignments include being a member of the UTM Campus Council for two terms, as well as member of the UTM Academic Affairs Committee. Dr. Akers was first appointed in 2013 and is in her third term on Campus Council, which ends June 30, 2018.

Biography

David has been serving the public for over 30 years. As the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Region of Peel, David is responsible for the co-ordination of all administrative and service delivery functions, and for the overall management of the Regional Corporation. He oversees a diversified organization that provides essential public services to more than 1.3 million residents and 86,000 businesses in the Cities of Brampton, Mississauga, and the Town of Caledon

Prior to being appointed as CAO in October 2005, David served as Commissioner of Social Services and Director of Ontario Works in Peel. David has also held positions with the Government of Ontario and the Region of Halton. David has received the Rotary International Centennial Award for Professional Excellence. His work at Peel has been recognized with the IPAC Public Sector Leadership Award (Gold) and the Institute for Citizen-Centred Service (ICCS) 2012 Heintzman Leadership Award for the promotion of citizen-centred service within the Canadian public sector. David is a Fellow in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University.

David has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto (Mississauga, Ontario) and a Master's degree in Public Administration from Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), and has completed the Executive Education program at Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government (Cambridge, Mass.)

Sheldon Leiba is the President & CEO for Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT), the leading business association in Canada’s 6th largest city. The Mississauga Board of Trade represents businesses of all sizes in various industry sectors. As a not-for-profit, private sector business organization, the MBOT serves as the voice of business on issues of concern to the Mississauga business community and provides a wide diversity of business programs, services, events and benefits to help business develop and succeed. Mr. Leiba has consistently exemplified leadership in managing large, active and successful Boards of Trade. Since joining Mississauga Board of Trade in 2008, he has led a major renewal of the organization, enhancing its leadership role in the community and launching many new programs and initiatives to develop and connect business.

Mr. Leiba has been very active in supporting employment integration of immigrants initiatives, in particular developing the “ITS in Mississauga – Internationally Trained & Skilled” and “Skills Without Borders – Connecting Employers and Skilled Immigrants” award-winning program. Considering the diversity of UTM, participating in the UTM Campus Council is a natural extension of Mr. Leiba’s interests. Prior to joining Mississauga Board of Trade, Mr. Leiba was Chief Executive Officer for The Brampton Board of Trade.

Mr. Leiba’s previous assignments include being a member of the UTM Campus Council and Academic Affairs Committee. Mr. Leiba was first appointed in 2013, and is in his second term as Campus Council member, which ends on June 30, 2016.

Biography

Dr. Rav Kumar leads GlaxoSmithKline's Canadian Research & Development organization involved in Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs and External R&D Alliances as well as overseeing Business Development activities. Rav is a pharmacy graduate with a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences (from Bath University, UK) involving research into controlled delivery of drugs such as insulin. He has more than 25 years of global pharmaceutical industry experience having worked for start-up and multinational pharmaceutical companies in the United Kingdom, France and North America.

Dr. Kumar’s involvement on UTM Campus council is a natural extension of GSKs longstanding support of UTM.  GlaxoSmithKline and UTM have had a long-standing partnership, starting with GSK’s support of the master of biotechnology program (MBiotech). He is also involved in the School of Pharmacy Advancement Board and is President and Board Chair of SAPNA (a non-profit organization).  Previous roles include Past president of Canadian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Past Board Governor at Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton.  Rav is in his second term as community member on the UTM Campus Council.

Biography

Kevin Golding is President of Maximum Impact Marketing, a media consulting firm designed to add strategic direction and profitability to traditional and new age media companies. Previously, Kevin was Managing Director of private equity firm Vimy Ridge Group (VRG Capital) where Kevin oversaw the international digital media business headquartered in England.  Before joining VRG Capital, Kevin held many senior positions in the broadcast and media fields including General Manager at Pattison Outdoor Advertising, a division of the Jim Pattison Group and Vice President of Eucan, a division of Mexican owned Eumex.


Kevin became President of the University of Toronto Mississauga Alumni Association in 2013 and has been involved in the Association since 2011.  Kevin earned his M.B.A in business from the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and holds an Honours B.A from the University of Toronto.  

Kevin's past assignments include membership on the UTM Campus Council and the UTM Agenda Committee.

Biography

Mr. Gilmartin joined RBC in 1990 and has a wealth of experience gained from working in various parts of the organization including: direct sales, sales management, general management, product strategy, development & management, marketing, sales effectiveness, Human Resources and strategy.  Currently, Simon is Head Sales Support, RBC Automotive Finance.

Simon has an Economics degree from the University of Toronto Mississauga and is a Certified Financial Planner.  In addition to his work with UTM Mr. Gilmartin serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement Central Ontario and was the Charity Trust Cabinet Chair for RBC Insurance for the past 3 years. He is also the drummer for the "RBC Performing Assets" - a corporate band that supports internal events and external charity functions.

Mr. Gilmartin’s previous assignments include being a member of the UTM Campus Council as well as member of the UTM Academic Affairs Committee, and Vice-Chair of the Campus Affairs Committee.  Mr. Gilmartin was first appointed in 2013 and is serving his third term on UTM Campus Council, which ends June 30, 2019.
