Biography

Prof. Mihaela Pirvulescu is an Associate Professor in French Linguistics and her area of expertise is in first language acquisition, bilingualism and early second language acquisition. She published extensively in top ranked journals, co-edited a volume and is currently preparing a book on first language acquisition. She is involved in the European project “European cooperation in science and technology” (COST) on language acquisition and profiling bilingual specific language impairment. Prof. Pirvulescu served as discipline representative Linguistics Program (2006-2009), Graduate Coordinator in the Department of French (2011-2013) and is currently Associate Chair in the Department of Language Studies.

Prof. Pirvulescu is passionate about how children learn languages, whether as monolinguals or bilinguals. She is also looking into how age and experience influences language acquisition as well as how some dialectal variation is acquired.  Her past and current volunteering work includes work with elementary schools, community garden planting and maintenance, and with the community program Meals on Wheels.
