On November 25th, the Finance Learning Centre hosted representatives from FactSet, an international financial data and software company, to give a talk about the database, its applications and how students can utilise the software to obtain relevant financial information.

Student watching company representatives give a live demonstration of FactSet functions. The representatives gave students a live demonstration of many useful FactSet functions ranging from how to look up key operating ratios of a specific company or industry to the different ways a student can use the software to analyze, create and monitor their own portfolio. This was particularly useful to students who are competing in this year’s IMI Finance Competition and were looking for a way to analyze possible investment options in depth or prepare different potential trading scenarios for their portfolios.

The representatives spoke about their career paths and how they led to their current jobs at FactSet. They also answered questions regarding their previous international internship experiences and provided the students with some good interview tips. A lot of emphasis was placed on the importance for Excel in any finance career.

One last piece of advice they had for students was to pursue a career in Finance was that they must “have a general passion for the capital markets”.
