U of T Mississauga receives $10-million investment from City of Mississauga

The City of Mississauga is investing $10 million over 10 years to help build the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Innovation Complex, a facility that will transform business education and help to develop a culture of innovation and drive economic development in the region. The investment is the largest municipal grant ever made to U of T Mississauga.

A commitment to excellence and a passion for research and student success were recognized at this year’s U of T Mississauga Principal’s Awards Reception on December 2 in the Faculty Club. Professor Deep Saini, Vice-President of U of T and Principal of U of T Mississauga joined students and colleagues in presenting the awards for contributions to the fields of Teaching Excellence, Research Excellence and Staff Services.

Staff and faculty in fancy dress at the United Way Halloween fundraiser

The 2013 UTM United Way campaign is in its final week with donations still welcome to help reach this year’s target. The generosity shown during the campaign will help make this Christmas a bright one for hundreds of local families living in poverty. The campaign, which runs until the holiday break, aims to raise $69,000 this year.

Chief Librarian appointed at U of T Mississauga

Chief Librarian Ian WhyteThe University of Toronto Mississauga has announced the appointment of Ian Whyte as Chief Librarian effective December 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016. Whyte has served as Acting Chief Librarian at U of T Mississauga since April 2012 and holds a bachelor of arts and master of library and information science from the University of Western Ontario. As Chief Librarian at the U of T Mississauga, Whyte will continue to promote innovation and foster links between the Library and faculties.

 

New Director of Alumni Relations

Director of Alumni Relations Christina FoxThe U of T Mississauga Office of Advancement has welcomed Christina Fox to the position of Director of Alumni Relations. Fox was appointed in December to lead the alumni portfolio after serving as Director of Development at the United Way of London and Middlesex, and Alumni Relations Officer at The University of Western Ontario.

Associate Professor Tracy Rogers, director of the Forensic Science Program at UTM, commented in the Montreal Gazette on the recovery efforts in Lac-Megantic and the process of identifying victims of the rail disaster. 

The Mississauga News previewed the Theatre Erindale’s annual Beck Festival at the MiST Theatre in the CCT Building at UTM.

Rhonda McEwen, assistant professor at the Institute of Communication, Culture and Information Technology, spoke with radio CBC host Mary Ito about the emergence of "selfie" photographs and the way young people interact with social media.

The New York Times interviewed Professor Michael Brand as part of a feature story on UTM’s historical archaeology field school. 

Amy Muise, a post-doctoral fellow Department of Psychology, was interviewed for Psychology Today a story about the physical relationships and habits of married couples.
