Outreach & Programming Assistants

The UTM Equity & Diversity Office is hiring 2 Outreach & Programming Assistants for 2018-19 school year to collaborate with other campus groups and departments on equity programming and to help develop equity-related programming (events and workshops).

Position Description

As student staff with the Equity & Diversity Office, you will work with other students to develop, facilitate, and implement equity programming and initiatives. This is a great opportunity to build and enhance skills in program planning and delivery while also contributing to a more inclusive campus environment.

The Equity & Diversity Office is looking for a student who:

  • Values diversity and is committed to equity and inclusivity
  • Knows about and will collaborate with student groups at UTM
  • Wants to build on their understanding of inclusivity
  • Will actively participate in outreach and equity-related programming at UTM
  • Takes initiative and is capable of working independently

Responsibilities

Outreach

  • Contact and build relationships with student clubs, academic societies, and student leaders to raise awareness about equity-related initiatives and services
  • Collaborate and develop equity-related programs with other student groups on campus
  • Promote equity services and upcoming events to the campus community through tabling, group liaising, and classroom announcements

Programming

  • Plan, promote, and implement equity-related activities for students
  • Organize and conduct tabling and classroom introductions as a way to raise awareness about equity-related services and programs
  • Co-facilitate discussion circles and/or workshops
  • Participate in and/or chair event-planning meetings

Other

  • Assist Outreach & Marketing Assistant in developing promotional materials and sourcing content for office’s social media
  • Recruit, provide orientation introduction, and co-lead Equity & Diversity Office volunteers
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Some evening and weekend shifts may be required

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in event planning, discussion or workshop facilitation, and/or presentations
  • Commitment to improving equity and inclusivity as well as responding to issues such as ableism, classism, homophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, etc.
  • Familiar with other student groups on campus
  • Willingness to listen to different points of view, engage in respectful dialogue, and work with a variety of groups
  • Familiar with multimedia, presentation, and Office Suite software (e.g. PowerPoint; Prezi; Word; Excel)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • Openness to self-reflection and willingness to learn new tasks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills and research experience
  • Beneficial if have a working knowledge of anti-oppression, critical race, critical disability, feminist, queer, and/or intersectional theoretical approaches

Terms of Employment

  • Position to begin the first week of September for campus orientation programming
  • Approximately 5-12 hours per week through the academic year
