WELCOME
We have an exciting year planned for you! On our Main Stage: This is the first time we have produced a play by the acclaimed German playwright Bertolt Brecht – The Caucasian Chalk Circle. It will be directed by rising young star Ted Witzel – whose innovative All’s Well That Ends Well is playing at CanStage’s Dream in High Park this summer. We have a brand new adaptation of Hedda Gabler by full time faculty (and director of last year’s hit The Seagull) Melee Hutton. We are also delighted to bring Gemini nominated actor and director Anita La Selva to Theatre Erindale. She is directing Helen Edmundson’s excellent adaptation of George Eliot’s classic novel The Mill on the Floss. We are closing the season with long time Artistic Director of Theatre Erindale, Patrick Young, directing one of the most charming and hilarious plays in theatrical history - Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
Another first for us is our Studio Series which is designed to exhibit the work of our third year students. In the fall they will be working on a devised theatre piece that we would love to tell you about…but it hasn’t been created yet! We will let you know as details emerge. In the winter Artistic Director David Matheson will be directing an innovative adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This will be performed at our new rehearsal halls in Deerfield and will travel to Sheridan College in its second week.

The Main Stage is the key to the “Launch Year” for our graduating students. You will see the next generation of actors before they go off and do amazing things.

A revolution in the Caucasus Mountains. Beheadings, bloodshed, and a civil war that rages through the countryside. In the midst of the turmoil an abandoned royal baby finds an unlikely and reluctant foster mother, and the two embark on an epic journey to save the child. When peace is restored, the baby is discovered, and a judge must decide who is the child’s true mother. Brecht’s playful and ironic storytelling is at its height in this dramatic parable about family, class, and justice in a society trying to rebuild itself.

Welcome to the most significant 24 hours in the life of Hedda Gabler. She returns from a six-month honeymoon into a dream house and a seemingly bright future. Then everything she has run from her whole life comes crashing against her. Hedda’s burning desire to escape convention battles with her fear of scandal. This production will explore Ibsen’s great turn-of-the-century drama of a caged woman by transposing it into the world of 1960s Feminism.

Young Maggie Tulliver sacrifices family loyalty for life and love in this 19th-century tale of a young woman whose intelligence and passionate nature clash with the expectations of her family and the stifling society she lives in. Helen Edmundson’s adaptation brings the classic feminist novel by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) to vivid life, with theatricality, bold physicality, and humour.

Two young men try to keep one face for polite society and another that lets them indulge their naughty desires. But when one pretends to be the other for a girl, all heck breaks loose. The silly pomposities of Victorian class and courtship are exploded forever!

STUDIO SERIES
The Studio Series exhibits the work of our third-year class. This is the students’ “Indie Year”, when they will do what many aspiring young professionals do – produce their own work and participate in bare-bones classical theatre.
THE DEVISED PROJECT

Our third-year class will be creating an original production with Toronto theatre maker Rachel Blair. Learning various modern devising techniques and working as a company, the class will collectively produce a piece that will be unique, personal, and contemporary. Performances for the Devised Project take place in Studio A of our new facilities in Deerfield Hall.

An experimental take on Shakespeare’s tragedy. A different cast every show. See a female Hamlet one performance, and a male the next! The players will be informed of their roles in the first minute and then the play begins! This production will spend a week in our new rehearsal/performance space halls (Deerfield Studio A) and then travel to Sheridan College for its second week. A bold, innovative take on a masterpiece!
