My name is Tomisin, and I am currently a final year student studying economics, geography and sociology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga (UTM). I am an international student and I have the opportunity of being a part of an economics internship program with a placement at the City of Mississauga’s Economic Development Office.

This internship program offered by UTM is a great opportunity for me to gain experience in the ‘real world’ and apply the knowledge gained through my study of economics in real life environments. This internship provides me with various benefits, apart from working with an amazing group of people, like developing research skills.

Currently, I am involved in a major research project with a project team to understand and grow Mississauga’s life sciences sector. The project focuses on the analysis of Mississauga’s life science sector and understanding its competitive advantage relative to other cities and clusters. I, along with the team focus on Mississauga’s advantages and use these benefits to target opportunities for life science businesses to develop and continue to grow in Mississauga.

I have also enriched my communication skills, as I talk to future entrepreneurs who have questions relating to starting, building or growing a business while working at the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre(MBEC). During my time at MBEC, I provided information on the basics of starting a business, such as: business plan preparation, business taxes, licensing, regulations, etc. I would also assist in setting up seminars and workshop series for the Centre.

Participating in UTM’s internship program, has been very eye opening and insightful as I have the opportunity of networking with various professionals. My main interest is solving problems as a form of helping people, and that is what the Economic Development Office is about, helping businesses in Mississauga grow. I have also seen the benefits and advantages of internship programs and I know that all students would highly benefit from gaining work experience and transferable skills that will prepare them for a future career path.
