Outline of Research

Over the past four years, I have developed a series of research-based works in print, drawing, video and on-site painting that investigates youth rebellion and violence within death metal culture. This work seeks to open up the discourse surrounding suburban rebellion, the influence of music on youth culture, and issues of isolation and dissent through an investigation of the music, iconography, fashion and aggressive actions of this subculture.

Biography

Born in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Poolman is a BFA graduate of the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and he holds an MFA from the University of Windsor. Working in drawing, video, print media and installation, Poolman has exhibited in art galleries and screened in festivals nationally and internationally.

Poolman's recent exhibitions include shows at Stride Gallery (Calgary, AB), University of Toronto Art Centre (Toronto, ON), University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge, AB), Museum London (London, ON), Ziehersmith Gallery (New York, NY), University of Waterloo (Waterloo, ON), Eyelevel Gallery (Halifax NS), Openspace (Victoria BC), and an upcoming exhibition at the Art Gallery of Windsor (Windsor, ON). His videos have screened most recently in the following festivals: 21 instants video (Lebanon / Montreal), Festival Miden (Kalmata, Greece), EMAF (Osnabrueck, Germany) and Trunk 07: Nordic Video Art Festival (Östersund, Sweden).

David Poolman and Jeremy Drummond co-founded SPARK VIDEO CANADA, a monthly international video series, and they have co-curated film and video screenings for Museum London, Videopool (Winnipeg, MB), Sushi Performance Space (San Diego, CA), and in Balchik Bulgaria. Poolman regularily collaborates with artists, Andrew Hunter, Kathryn Mockler, and Roman Tkaczyk.

Approach to Teaching

As a visual arts professor, I am dedicated to fostering a creative environment in which students are challenged to investigate visual communication. It is my goal to encourage students to interpret and question their preconceived ideas and assumptions of the world around them as they wrestle with producing work that is socially, culturally and politically engaging.
