Dennis Fernandes (Supervisor: Professor Claudiu Gradinaru) has been awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship at the University of Toronto. Dennis is a new PhD student in Physics (graduated from UTM this year). Dennis will study the interaction between G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and their G-protein using single-molecule fluorescence techniques. This interaction is very important for the treatment of various diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Zhenfu Zhang, PhD Candidate, Physics (Supervisor: Professor Claudiu Gradinaru) won a competitive graduate student award from the CIHR Training Program in Protein Folding and Interaction Dynamics ($15,000/year for 18 months) for a collaborative project with the Forman-Kay group at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto focused on “Phosphorylation-Dependent 4E-BP2:eIF4E Interaction Using Ensemble and Single Molecule Approaches”.

Greg Gomes, PhD Candidate, Physics (Supervisor: Professor Claudiu Gradinaru), won an award for Best Student Poster Presentation at the 2013 CAP (Canadian Association of Physicists) Congress in Montreal and, as a result, he published a feature article in the latest printed issue of the CAP journal, Physics in Canada.
