“I manage a basic research laboratory studying molecular aspects of pancreatic beta-cell function,” Allen says of his job. “You have to love to do science and discover new things because running a research laboratory is very demanding. Secondly, you need a positive attitude and lots of dedication. Having fun is key and not getting too down when things are not going your way.”

Allen, who earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from U of T, held many positions on his way to becoming a scientist. At the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, he was first a Post-doctoral Fellow and then a Senior Research Scientist for the Functional Proteomics Project. He is also currently a member of the American Society of Cell Biology.

“At this stage, I don't think I would do anything differently,” he says.
