IMPORTANT UPDATE: Due to the popularity of the Work-Study Program, there is a limit on the number of Work-Study jobs that can be funded. For the Fall-Winter Program, the hiring deadline is September 30 OR when the budget has been fully committed, whichever comes first. For the Fall-Winter Program, if your position was approved, the Hiring Form for the student you choose to hire must be received by Admissions and Awards to ensure the position will be funded. Please note that the form MUST be received by Admissions and Awards for the hiring process to be considered complete.
All employers will be sent a short message shortly before the
Program's funds have been committed. |
Work-Study is a financial aid program that provides opportunities for eligible students to be employed part-time on campus during their studies. Positions must be academic or career related and the funding covers 100% of the student's salary and benefits.
We encourage you to participate and support students in the Summer Work-Study Program and the Fall-Winter Work Study Program.
Fall-Winter Work-Study Program
The University of Toronto Fall-Winter Work-Study Program allows eligible students to be employed part-time on campus during the fall and winter terms. This program is available to students on all three campuses. To be eligible to submit job proposals, employers must be a member of the U of T Faculty, Staff or an affiliated group.
Deadline: Job proposals for the Summer Work-Study Program MUST be submitted between Monday, April 18th, 2011 and Friday, May 27, 2011. Proposals cannot be considered after this date.
Program Highlights:
- The 2011-2012 Fall-Winter Work-Study Program runs from September 6, 2011 to March 2, 2012 (postings available for viewing September 1)
- Eligible students are able to work a maximum of 12 hours per week, up to 180 hours, within the above timeframe
- Rate of pay is $10.25/hour plus 4% vacation pay. There is NO COST to the University of Toronto Department for the student’s earnings or benefits. The Academic/Career related position covers 100% of the student’s salary and benefits. Salary may be supplemented by the hiring department if desired.
- The approved positions do not carry any value. Funding is based on the student’s eligibility, not the specified job description. Funding comes from two sources: The Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities and the University of Toronto.
- There are a MAXIMUM of 2 VACANCIES PER JOB PROPOSAL. This means you may request to hire a maximum of two students per position when you submit your job proposal.
- The hiring deadline is September 30th, or when the budget has been fully committed, whichever comes first. It is important that the completed Hiring Form be received by Admissions and Awards as soon as you have hired a student to ensure the position will be funded.
Submission and Approval Procedures
The Office of Admissions & Awards will review your proposal and you will receive your approval email from Admissions & Awards by late August. This process will take a few months due to a high volume of proposals. Due to a limited amount of funding, not all job proposals submitted will be approved.
All approved positions will be advertised to students on the Career Centre website on September 1, 2011. Students on all three campuses have access to view Summer Work-Study job listings.
Guidelines for Faculty & Staff submitting proposals
All work study job proposal forms MUST:
- have two contacts listed who are U of T Faculty or Staff members. Students cannot be listed as contact persons and may not supervise students hired under the program;
- have a U of T Faculty or Staff member who is responsible in all respects for the Work-Study position;
- include the telephone number of the department’s payroll officer who will be processing the student timesheets;
- have positions listed under this program that do not contravene a union agreement. Check with Labour Relations if unsure;
- clearly offer to the student more than just financial benefits. Jobs must supplement the student’s current field of study with practical experience, or provide duties (non-clerical in nature) useful for exploring future academic programs or career areas.
Proposals that will be considered should:
- be created specifically for this program
- be flexible in terms of hours of work to accommodate student’s academic schedules
- clearly indicate the academic/career related benefits
Proposals that will NOT be considered are:
- volunteer jobs converted to work-study positions
- jobs essential to the department, to the degree that operations would be jeopardized if a student was not hired
- clerical jobs; data entry, word processing or filing
