Working in Canada: Panel for International Students and New Canadians

NOTE: This event has been cancelled due to low registration.

In collaboration with the International Education Centre

Many international students wish to work in Canada upon completion of their degree. By attending this panel students from all disciplines will:

  • Learn from those who have successfully made the transition from student to career.
  • Hear panellists' stories, advice and suggestions of how they built experience and started their careers.
  • The panel will also be open to questions from students and mix and mingle for individual networking.

Jenny Ng, Financial Planning Associate, TD Wealth Financial Planning

Jenny came from Hong Kong as an international student in 2008 to attend Grade 12 in Canada, and graduated from U of T in 2013. Jenny has been with TD Bank ever since her graduation. She joined TD Canada Trust as a Customer Services Representative, went on to become a Financial Services Representative, and joined TD Wealth as a Financial Planning Associate last year. Jenny applied for herpermanent residency through the Express Entry system in 2015 and she is very honoured to now be a permanent resident of Canada.

Areej Shah, Marketing Coordinator, Grade Learning 

Areej Shah is a Marketing Coordinator at Grade Learning, a private educational company aiming to facilitate the career development of learners of all ages. She graduated from University of Toronto, Mississauga with Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA). Other than all things marketing, she is passionate about helping millennials transition into the workforce and offer advice based on her experience in the marketing industry. Marina Defferrari, Post Doctoral Fellow, UTM Biology

Marina graduated in 2007, in Brazil, as a Biologist and started her Masters degree right after that, at the same university. Soon after starting grad school, she was invited to come to Canada as an exchange student for six months at UTM, funded by NSERC. She then went back to Brazil, got her Masters degree in Cell and Molecular Biology and started her PhD, which was also developed half in Brazil, half at UTM. After getting her PhD she did a one-year post-doc and was again invited to come to UTM, this time as a post-doc, where she is currently developing studies on Insulin-like peptides in an invertebrate model.

Toyin Akin-Johnson, Senior Human Capital Analyst, Mercer Consulting 

Toyin graduated from UTM in 2013 with a Commerce Specialist in Finance and Major in Economics degree.During his time at UTM, he was a teaching assistant for Economics and Accounting. He also worked as a Membership Service Advisor at the recreational centre.
Toyin has since worked in industry as a Financial Analyst and switched to a more external client facing role in 2014 as a Human Capital Consultant.
