Program Expectations
Understand what this program is about (and what is it not).
First and foremost, this program is designed to allow you to explore your career options by speaking with a UT Mississauga alum working in a career area of interest to you. By speaking with a professional, you may be able to find answers to questions that are not easily available through other forms of research. You can use this program to build your network and get advice on how to break into certain fields. The program, however, is not intended to help you land a job upon graduation, so please do not ask your contact if they can help you get a job! Learn more about information interviews.
Be professional.
By taking part in this program, you are representing the University of Toronto Mississauga. It is expected that you will be professional in all of your interactions with alumni and that you will respect the time and effort put into this program by our alumni volunteers.
Prepare before you meet.
The Alumni Career Connections Program is an excellent way of learning more about a particular career area or industry from a UT Mississauga alum who, not that long ago, likely had many of the same questions that you have now. Please be prepared with your questions in advance; click here to learn more about how to prepare and questions you can ask.
Make a good impression.
Be sure to show up to your meeting on time (it is best to arrive at least 5 minutes early). Avoid cancelling appointments in all but the most extenuating of circumstances. Dress appropriately. Respect the time put into this program by our alumni volunteers and keep to the schedule and timeframe you have arranged.
Next steps.
While most alum have agreed to take part in one-time informational interviews with students, there are some who are willing to meet with students more than once. You will be provided with this information before you make contact. After you meet/talk, we highly recommend that you send a thank you note. The Career Centre will send you a follow-up evaluation after your meeting.
Please note.
Students who do not conduct themselves in a professional manner will not be eligible to make future requests through this program and may be ineligible from taking part in other Career Centre networking programs or events.
