“My primary responsibilities include teaching, research and scholarship, and service to the department and to the college. I regularly teach ‘Introduction to Sociology’ and ‘Methods of Social Research,’ conduct research on male and female scientific pioneers, and contribute my time to professional organizations,” says Joyce, who also has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Sociology.

“My research focuses on stratification and mobility in science and engineering. I regularly offer courses on the introduction to sociology and research methods.”

Joyce, who is also the President of the Epsilon Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, says her work requires innovation, discipline, hard work, an inquisitive mind, and a dedication and commitment to teaching.

Prior to her current position, Joyce worked as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Vermont from 1991 to 1994 and then Assistant Professor of Sociology at Queens College/CUNY from 1994 to 1999. She searched for these jobs by talking to faculty advisors and members of her dissertation committee and answered job ads in the employment bulletin for sociologists and in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

“Let mentors or sponsors know about your career interests and plans. Develop and sustain a strong record in research and scholarship. Share research findings with peers in and outside your field,” she says.

“Work very hard. Enjoy what you are doing. Be willing to go the extra mile in everything that you do.”
