Energy acquisition and allocation patterns of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) are modified when dreissenids are present

This week we recognize the work of former Ph.D. student Mike Rennie from the Sprules Lab.

Mike’s paper was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. His research demonstrates indirect ecological effects of invading dreissenid mussels on lake whitefish. The mussels have modified the prey base in a manner that increases the foraging activity and hence costs for whitefish, and this probably explains why individual growth rates of whitefish have declined in many invaded lakes.

Mike is currently working as a scientist with the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans in Winnipeg. Congratulations, Mike!
