Effects of Bythotrephes longimanus (Crustacea, Cladocera) on the abundance, morphology, and prey community of Leptodora kindtii (Crustacea, Cladocera)

Sophie Foster
This week we recognize the work of former PhD student Sophie Foster from the Sprules Lab and former EEB Post-Doc Angela Strecker.

Their paper recently appeared in Hydrobiologia. In this paper they demonstrate interesting indirect ecological effects of the invasive predatory invertebrate (Bythotrephes) on a related native predator (Leptodora); probably by changing the composition of the zooplankton community upon which both predators depend, Bythotrephes has induced morphological changes in Leptodora.

Sophie is now a Science Advisor for the Aquatic Invasive Species Program at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Ottawa, and Angela has gone onto an Assistant Professor position at Portland State University. Congratulations!
