Winner of the 2014 Hottest Student Paper Award

UTM Biology’s HOTTEST papers were announced at the picnic on July 9. There were many great papers this year and the winner of the HOTTEST PAPER AWARD for 2014 is Charlotte de Araujo (Espie Lab) for her paper:

De Araujo, Arefeen, Tadesse, Long, Price, Rowlett, Kimber and Espie. 2014. Identification and characterization of a carboxysomal gamma-carbonic anhydrase form the cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. PCC 7120. Photosynthesis Research 121:135-150

The committee was impressed by the novelty, depth and breadth of Charlotte’s work, which left no stone unturned in their rigorous analyses.

This was a very tight race with a close 2nd place (runner-up) going to former PDF Martin Turcotte and PhD student Nash Turley (Johnson Lab) for their paper:

Turcotte, Turley and Johnson. 2014. The impact of domestication on resistance to two generalist herbivores across 29 independent domestication events. New Phytologist 2014: 671-681.

The committee thought the paper took a novel comparative approach with rigorous experiments and analyses.

A big thank you to the Hottest Paper Award committee, chaired by John Ratcliffe and members Sanja Hinic-Frlog, Steven Chatfield and Mary Cheng.
