Three UTM Biologists Win Awards

Linda Kohn has won the prestigious Distinguished Mycologist Award. This award is given annually to “an individual who has established an outstanding mycological career and is one of the highest awards bestowed by the Mycological Society of America marking a distinguished career”. Linda’s publication record is outstanding, with 79 refereed publications, 17 non-refereed publications and 60 invited conference presentations. She has also served as the President, Vice-President, President-elect and Secretary of the Mycological Society of America. Congratulations Linda, this is a well-deserved honor!

Two other members of Biology have won the 2012 UTM Excellence awards.

Joel Levine has won the UTM Research Excellence award. This award recognizes excellence in research by the “degree to which the faculty member has had a relevant and sustained impact through contributions to her/his field of study, is able to stimulate and challenge the research ability of students, to communicate research results effectively, and to maintain a mastery of his/her subject area”. The nomination package was outstanding with numerous letters describing the tremendous contributions Joel is making to his research field.

Lisa Cheung has won the UTM Staff Service award. This award recognizes “service to UTM that exceeds job parameters. Through the efforts of this staff member, there has been noticeable improvement in specific areas at U of T Mississauga”.  Lisa clearly fits this description, especially this year as she took a leading role in the teaching lab renovations planning process. Lisa volunteered to take on many of the tedious and time consuming tasks, and her knowledge and constructive advice was instrumental in the design process.

Congratulations to Linda, Joel and Lisa!
