UTM Cross Country team has Strong Performance at the OCAA Provincials

UTM’s entire Cross Country team had an amazing performance at the OCAA provincials hosted by Fanshawe in London on October 28th, 2017.

UTM’s Sophie Glanz finished in 5th place with a time of 23:01.4.  She will now represent UTM and team Ontario at the Nationals in Quebec on November 11th, 2017.  Glanz a medical student at UTM and a first time varsity athlete, was also named OCAA Cross Country Rookie of the Year and added to the first team All Ontario.  Glanz now has the honour of being UTM’s first ever OCAA award winner and the first ever to represent UTM and team Ontario at the CCAA National level.

Another UTM medical student also had an amazing race.  Stephanie Nevison finished 12th overall with a time of 24:21.2.  Nevision was named to 2nd team All Ontario and will represent UTM at the Nationals both as an individual and as part of the UTM team.

Our women’s team finished 4th in Ontario based on some great times by all runners.  Andrea Ortiz 26:21.3, Jerusha Colucci 26:24.8, Rebecca Wong 28:58.5 and Rebecca Allan 29.01.8 rounded out the UTM women’s team.   With their 4th overall finish, the UTM women’s team will now represent Ontario and UTM at the CCAA Nationals.

On the men’s side, UTM had two runners in the top 20 at the Provincials.  Kale Heino finished 15th with a time of 27:55.9 and Haseeb Malik was 19th at 28:14.6.  Both Heino and Malik have both qualified to represent UTM as individuals at the Nationals.  This will mark the third straight year the Heino and Malik have qualified for the Nationals.   Jerry Lai finished with a time of 33:23.5 to round out UTM men’s runners at the Provincials.

Head Coach Adam Hassen and Assistant Coaches Sara Fournier, Ayah Abdeldayem and Sam Dumcum are incredibly proud of their athletes and the results.  8 of their 9 athletes have qualified for the Nationals in Quebec.  That is every coaches goal at the start of the year and to send essentially the entire team is an amazing accomplishment for this young OCAA program.  The team is now looking to post some strong results in Quebec and finish the season on a high note.
