canfitpro Certification Courses
Want to increase your fitness knowledge, become certified as a personal trainer, or instruct group fitness classes? UTM is pleased to be a host site for the canfitpro Program. The canfitpro courses listed below are your first steps in becoming a leader in the future of Canadian fitness.
The Personal Trainer Specialist Course (PTS)
This is a comprehensive 25-hour course that will increase your knowledge and confidence to train clients in a 1-on-1 or small group (2-3 people) setting. A canfitpro certified PTS is qualified to evaluate, prescribe and monitor individual training programs in a health club and or home / workplace setting. You will learn the skills needed to train a client with no special health concerns. Choose a session that fits your schedule.

The Fitness Instructor Specialist Course (FIS)
This is a comprehensive 22-hour course that will increase your knowledge and confidence to lead a group fitness class to music. A qualified Fitness Instructor Specialist can lead groups in various cardiovascular conditioning formats, muscle strength and endurance training, stretching and relaxation, or a calming cool-down. Choose a session that fits your schedule.

Please Note: Basic Adult CPR certification is required to become canfitpro Certified. First Aid is recommended although not required. CPR is valid up to one year from the date it was originally issued. CPR recertification must be completed annually to renew your certification. Although CPR certification is required to complete your canfitpro certification process, it is not required prior to taking the course or exams.

Theory Exam Schedule

Please Note: Registration for exams only is done through canfitpro directly at http://www.canfitpro.com, or call 1-800-667-5622 ext 224.
UTM can not accept registration for exams. Spaces are limited to 30 registrants per exam, so please register early.
- PTS and FIS Practical Exams
Theory Exams will be held in the Fitness Studio on the last Monday of every month. Both PTS and FIS theory exams will be held on these nights. It is recommended that you write the exam 3 to 4 weeks following the course. Although it is recommended that you take the course, exams can be written without taking the course if you feel you have sufficient experience / education.
- PTS and FIS Practical Exams
These are booked following the Theory Exams. For the PTS, Practical exams will be handed out at the theory exam and scheduled one-on-one with your Pro Trainer. For the FIS, dates will be announced at the theory exam. More information regarding Practical Exams will be posted on our website.
UTM Personal Training Mentorship Program
The UTM Personal Training Mentorship Program is designed for new and established certified Personal Trainers, combining in-class modules with practical experience. Current and effective research based training methods will be presented then expanded through practical application. Most importantly, Mentees have the opportunity to shadow and assist our Senior Personal Trainers working with clients coaching athletes, and leading small group training sessions.
