2014 Summer Transition Program for Incoming First Year Students with Learning Disabilities

Saturday, Aug. 23-Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014

10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Summer Transition Program for Students with Learning Disabilities is a comprehensive orientation program for incoming first year UTM students with learning disabilities. This FREE two-day program will provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to have a successful transition to the University's academic environment. You will develop these skills by participating in a series of interactive sessions that include:

  • managing your academic accommodations
  • learning about your learning disability and learning profile (e.g., strengths and challenges)
  • meeting with a faculty member and participating in a lecture
  • getting to know the campus resources including electronic resources in the library
  • learning how to utilize your strategies from successful UTM students who have learning disabilities
  • meeting your peer mentor who will help guide you through your first year at UTM

You will also learn skills and strategies to enhance your learning experience including:

  • test-taking strategies
  • taking effective notes
  • using assistive technology
  • study skills strategies
  • time management tools
  • self-advocacy and self-determination
  • balancing your academics and wellbeing

Registration is for both days of the two-day program and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free lunch and parking are provided on both days. Overnight off-campus accommodations are available for students attending from out of town.

For the purposes of this program, Individual Education Plans (IEP) are not accepted as sufficient medical documentation.  Additionally, for students who are international or speakers of English as a Second/Foreign Language, your diagnosis of a learning disability must have been made in your primary language spoken.
