Spacer Geography Department ::  Welcome Message ::

Welcome to the Department of Geography, University of Toronto Mississauga. Our department is comprised of 12 faculty members and is currently home to over 200 majors and 200 minors.

The discipline of geography bridges the scientific and the cultural study of the earth. The tangible characteristics that describe earth are the domain of physical geographers. Courses and research in physical geography focus on climates, the formation of landforms, and plant and animal distribution. Human geographers, on the other hand, explore issues such as population, economies and urban form. Their research into the intricacies of human existence is fundamental to our understanding of cultures.

We welcome students interested in learning more, first-hand, about the most relevant and interesting issues facing the globe today. Students in our courses can choose to study topics as varied as the intricacies of climate change, how to plan new communities or establish evacuation plans, or the impact of globalization on Canadian society. We also offer students the opportunity to study Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computerized mapping and data analysis that is a valuable tool in understanding both the physical and human impacts on earth and its environment. Spatial data on a variety of subjects is available for our students to create an infinite number of maps as well as undertake other types of statistical analysis.

We believe that the ability to analyze issues geographically gives us the capacity to better understand the societies and spaces in which we live. Our professors excel at presenting material that is challenging and relevant. Additionally, our graduate students are an integral part of our close knit and dynamic department and participate actively in faculty research programs and undergraduate teaching. Please feel free to drop by our department or contact any of our faculty for more information about our programs and courses.
