The Academic Appeals Board (AAB) considers appeals against decisions of Committee on Standing (COS) with respect to petitions from undergraduate students relating to exemption from the application of academic regulations or standards pertaining to courses at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (Appeals pertaining to courses offered on other University of Toronto campuses come under the jurisdiction of the Academic Appeals Board of the respective campus). COS must hear all cases (petitions) before it can be appealed to the Board. For more information on the petitions process through the Office of the Registrar and COS, including the relevant forms, please click HERE. An appeal to the AAB must be launched within 90 days of the decision of COS. The Board’s decision is final within the University of Toronto at Mississauga, but it may be appealed within 90 days of its decision to the Academic Appeals Committee of Governing Council.
Students appealing the decision of the Committee On Standing on their petition, fill out an appropriate form available in the Office of the Registrar. Please note that a meeting with an academic counselor in the Office of the Registrar is recommended prior to submitting an appeal. Once this form has been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, it will be forwarded to the Academic Appeals Board, which meets approximately once per month. Appelants are required to present their case in person, at a meeting convened to hear such cases. At the meeting, it is the responsibility of the appelant to convince the board that due to circumstances beyond their control, they should be exempt from an academic regulation.
The provision of supporting documentation is essential in this process and strenghtens any case.
Note to appelants: If you are unsure about the provision of appropriate documentation for the appeals process, or for more information, please contact Cindy Ferencz Hammond, Director, Governance and Special Projects.
