Backgrounder: Health Sciences Complex at U of T Mississauga (October 23, 2009)

• Total project cost: $37 million
• Funding source: Government of Ontario, University of Toronto and private donors
• Total gross m2: 5,960
• Primary use of building: Mississauga Academy of Medicine, research laboratories and biomedical communications program
• Designed by Alar Kongats, award-winning principal architect of Kongats Architects
• Construction start: Summer 2009
• Built by Harbridge + Cross Limited
• Complex will house the Academy of Medicine - U of T's fourth - which represents a partnership among the Government of Ontario, the University of Toronto Mississauga, the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Trillium Health Centre and Credit Valley Hospital.
• Includes new laboratory space for biosciences research
• Will house expanded facilities for the graduate biomedical communications program, which is unique in Canada and one of only five accredited programs of its kind in the world.
• First class of 54 medical students will walk through the doors in the summer of 2011, with 216 students at the academy by 2014.
• In keeping with the campus' commitment to "Grow Smart, Grow Green", the building will incorporate energy-efficient lighting and use rainwater to fill toilets and water its green roof, and will achieve LEED® silver (and possibly gold) status-an internationally recognized standard in green buildings.
• Built in response to the need for additional science teaching and research space as well as the Government of Ontario's 2006 announcement of medical school enrolment expansion.
